The crime of federal wire fraud occurs when electronic communication devices are used to commit a fraud. This electronic communication can be via wire, radio, computer, or television.
More specifically, under 18 U.S.C. § 1343, it is a crime for a person who has devised or intends to devise a scheme or artifice to defraud or to obtain money or property by means of false or fraudulent pretenses, representations, or promises in order to transmit or cause to be transmitted by means of wire, radio, or television communication, any writings, signs, signals, sounds, or pictures for the purpose of executing the scheme or artifice.
A violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1343 can be punishable by a fine, imprisonment of not more than 20 years, or both.
